I have a theory about this.

As with many things that are difficult, if you knew how hard it was really going to be before you set out, you likely wouldn’t go through with it. We need a certain amount delusional naivety.

You hear this all the time from successful comedians and actors, who will tell you they succeeded through a combination of dumb luck and delusional dreaming. You have to be able to believe that you can succeed where others have failed.

I’m sure many people have dreamt of living abroad as expatriates, but few even attempt it. Those who do might find it too daunting and scurry home. A few persist and build a life.

Ironically, it probably doesn’t help that so many writers have romanticized the experience in books and magazine articles. (Wink, wink)

P.S. For the record, I’ve been following your stories and am aware of your situation.

A cranky romantic searching for hope and humor. I tell stories. Most of them are true. I’m not at all interested in your outrage, but I do feel your pain.
