I’m no military expert, but I believe the flags were largely used so that soldiers knew where the rest of their side was. Units versus battalions versus armies. They certainly made an effort to instill some sense of pride in their army’s flag, but like modern soldiers, their loyalty was to their unit and the man next to them, far more than some ideology or monarchy.
