It’s hard. There are a lot of weak books with decent plots that make good films. Michael Blake’s 1988 novel “Dances With Wolves” sucked but I enjoyed the movie. Kubrick’s “The Shining” might be a great movie but the author hated it because it wasn’t the story he wrote.
