Maybe it’s an age thing. I have no idea how old you are, but I’m totally with your mom on this. I have never looked at the date on any food, in the store or at home. My wife does. I figure if it’s in the store, it’s good. If it’s home, it’s good until it isn’t. I’ll know if I open it and it smells bad. Food doesn’t stick around that long anyway, so it’s usually not an issue.

Our son was complaining the other day about the date on a bottle of hot sauce. Hot sauce has the half life of plutonium. It never goes bad. Don’t worry about it.

I grew up with raw milk and you actually had to shake it. Relax.
