Of Kings And Gods

There were few patriots to be found on that day

On Jan 6, the American flag was in short supply in our nation’s Capitol, as there were very few patriots on hand to raise one. There were plenty of symbols worn and waved, proclaiming fealty to Trump, the Confederacy, QAnon, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and even Jesus Christ.

They claim allegiance to this country, just as they claim to follow Jesus, but their idolatry was everywhere that day. Fearful of becoming lost, they turned their backs on the laws of Moses and created an idol in their own image. A Golden Swine who hears their prayers and hates the same people they do.

They have no more need for the teachings of Jesus than of Judas; no more understanding of Thomas Aquinas than that of Thomas Jefferson. They treat the Constitution like they treat their Bible, choosing the parts they like and discarding the parts they don’t. They don’t look to either for their salvation.

Theirs is the theology of those who would be kings or gods. Who would gladly set themselves up as the Lord Almighty, or bend the knee to one who would do the same.

There was one flag we saw raised that day. Raised and lowered. Raised and lowered. As the man bearing it, beat a police officer who lay prone on the steps, with his American flag.

It was a sad day for patriots, for they were not there. They are not here.

A cranky romantic searching for hope and humor. I tell stories. Most of them are true. I’m not at all interested in your outrage, but I do feel your pain.
