It’s unclear how deep we could go and still recover. It’s possible we never would. By never I mean not in the future of anyone living today.

It’s also hard to imagine that anyone would ever purposely conceive of a country so large with independently functioning states unified by a central government. If America slips into autocracy, we will never again return to a functioning democracy as a single country.
