Who Are The Oath Keepers And What Are They Doing In New Jersey?
The extremist, right-wing group is part of the militia movement that sprang up largely as a reaction to the election of Barack Obama, America’s first Black President
You’ve heard a lot about the Proud Boys, a group of violent thugs who were involved in much of the chaos surrounding last week’s insurrection, riot, and takeover of the Capitol building last week. But another group you may not be as familiar with are the Oath Keepers.
“The Proud Boys are racist street fighters, but the Oath Keepers are an anti-government militia,” said Heidi Beirich, the director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center which tracks hate groups. While they claim that anyone is welcome, the Oath Keepers specifically target and recruit ex-military and law enforcement personnel to its ranks. Presumably with the purpose of influencing the police and the military since they believe that the government plans to use the police and military against the public.
Suspected members of this so-called extremist organization are wanted in connection with alleged crimes committed during last week’s riots.
