Why I Don’t Feel The Need To Start My Own Medium Publication

The Peter Principle was a concept developed by Laurence J. Peter in a book cleverly titled The Peter Principle, in which he observed that people tended to rise to their “level of incompetence.” The idea, revolutionary in 1969 when it was introduced, was that employees tend to be promoted, based on the success in a previous job, until they reached a level at which they were no longer competent. Skills in one job, often do not necessarily translate to another, so rewarding success in one arena, with a promotion to a different one that is arbitrarily deemed more valuable, robs both the employee and the organization of the competence for the sake of promotion.

The classic example is the salesman who gets promoted to be sales manager. There is almost nothing that would suggest that someone who is good at sales, would also be good at management. In fact, more often than not, the complete opposite is true. The best manager in the company, might be the worst salesmen, as they have entirely different skill sets, and the best salesmen is almost certain to be the worst manager for exactly the same reason.
