HUMOR
Your Scatological Comedy Is Creeping Me The Fuck Out
I am not terribly amused by the disaster that is my own body let alone have any desire to frolic in your misadventures
There is a modern style of comedy that presumes to tackle taboo subjects we used to consider toilet humor, but that is now the latest gimmick in the oversharing genre. An attempt at discovering things that are commonly funny because they are universally true. I would posit that there are many things that we might consider universally true that are not commonly funny, let alone suitable dinner table conversation. Personally, there is nothing out of bounds as far as I am concerned, when it comes to comedy or writing, or any type of art for that matter. But that doesn’t mean it will find an audience with me.
Not that we want to hold me up as a bastion of open-minded, enlightened thinking. I am a 52-year-old, straight, white, married, mildly-repressed, middle-class, presbyterian man living in New Jersey. So I think it’s fair to say that can all agree that I am starting at both a position of incredible power and privilege and at the same time, at a wild disadvantage when it comes to accepting new ideas, especially if they conflict with a lifetime of being at the center of normative culture.
